Anniversary and Birthday messages

Each year, thousands of birthday and wedding anniversary cards are sent on behalf of His Majesty The King to people celebrating significant birthdays and wedding anniversaries

Cards are sent to those celebrating their 100th and 105th birthday and to couples who reach their diamond (60th), 65th and 70th wedding anniversaries, and every year thereafter. It is also possible to receive a belated message up to six months after the event.

The delivery of these messages is arranged by the Anniversaries Office at Buckingham Palace, continuing a tradition which goes back to 1917.

Congratulatory messages used to be sent as telegrams, now they are sent as greetings cards via Royal Mail.

Only current citizens of Commonwealth realms (countries where The King is Head of State) or UK Overseas Territories are eligible to receive messages.

Birthday messages

The Centenarian Team at the Department for Work and Pensions notify the Anniversaries Office of those approaching their birthday to ensure everyone receives a message, so it is not necessary to make an application.

However, if you wish to apply, visit the Royal Family website for further information on eligibility, to apply online or download an application form.

Wedding anniversary messages

Wedding anniversary messages are not arranged automatically and the Anniversaries Office must receive an application for a card to be sent. Please note that applications are not accepted any sooner than 5 weeks before the anniversary date.

For further information on eligibility, to apply online or to download the application form, visit the Royal Family website.

Personal presentations

Greeting cards are sent direct from HM The King, containing a personalised message and are sent via Royal Mail.

If you wish to make it a more memorable occasion please contact the Lieutenancy Office  to arrange to have the card personally presented by a Deputy Lieutenant.
