Honouring service, strengthening community, and supporting our Armed Forces family across Cumbria.
Our Historic Role
The office of the Lord-Lieutenant has deep roots in Britain’s military history. Originally charged with raising and commanding the local militia, Lieutenants have long represented the Crown’s link with the county’s defence and service.
Today, the Lieutenancy of Cumbria maintains strong ties with the Armed Forces, ensuring that the contribution of those who serve - past and present - is recognised and celebrated throughout the county.
Supporting the Armed Forces Community
Cumbria is home to many serving personnel, reservists, veterans, and their families. The Lieutenancy acts as a bridge between the Armed Forces and civil society - attending parades, remembrance events, medal ceremonies and Armed Forces Day celebrations, while encouraging local recognition of military service.
The Armed Forces Covenant
The Armed Forces Covenant is a national promise that those who serve, or have served, and their families, will not be disadvantaged by their service.
In Cumbria, councils, employers and community organisations work together to uphold this commitment - providing support in employment, housing, education and wellbeing.
The Lieutenancy encourages all employers and community partners in Cumbria to sign the Covenant and demonstrate their support for our Armed Forces community.
Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS)
The Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) celebrates employers who go above and beyond in supporting the Armed Forces community.
Several Cumbrian organisations, such as Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service and local councils, have achieved Silver and Gold ERS Awards for their commitment to veterans, reservists and cadet adult volunteers.
Cadet Forces in Cumbria
The Lieutenancy proudly supports the Cadet Forces - including the Army Cadet Force, Sea Cadets, Air Training Corps and Combined Cadet Force units across the county. These young people and their adult volunteers embody leadership, teamwork and public service, and play a vital role in their local communities.
The Lord-Lieutenant regularly attends cadet events, presents awards and celebrates their achievements. Cadets are also invited to serve as Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadets, supporting official duties and acting as ambassadors for youth service in Cumbria.
