Cumbria's New Lord-Lieutenant's Cadets Announced for 2026/27

8 October 2026

As part of the UK's first ever National Cadet Week, the Cumbria Lieutenancy is delighted to announce the appointment of its new Lord-Lieutenant's Cadets for 2026/27.

Leading Cadet Blake Atkinson, of Whitehaven Sea Cadet Corps, and Cadet Flight Sergeant Oliver Wielkopolski, of 128 (Barrow-in-Furness) Squadron RAF Air Cadets, have been selected in recognition of their dedication, leadership and commitment to the cadet movement.

The appointment of Lord-Lieutenant's Cadets is a long-established tradition across the United Kingdom, reflecting the close relationship between the Lieutenancy and the cadet forces. Each year, outstanding cadets are chosen to represent their respective organisations and support the Lord-Lieutenant, His Majesty The King's personal representative in the county, at official engagements throughout their year of office.

During their appointment, Lord-Lieutenant's Cadets may accompany the Lord-Lieutenant at civic services, remembrance events, award presentations, citizenship ceremonies and Royal visits, while acting as ambassadors for the wider cadet community.

The role highlights the significant contribution cadet organisations make in helping young people develop confidence, leadership, teamwork and resilience. Across Cumbria, hundreds of cadets and adult volunteers are involved in the Sea Cadets, RAF Air Cadets, Army Cadets and Combined Cadet Force, providing opportunities for young people to gain valuable skills, experiences and lifelong friendships.

Blake, aged 16, is a student at Cockermouth School Sixth Form, where he studies Chemistry, Economics and History. Through his involvement with Whitehaven Sea Cadet Corps, he has developed a wide range of skills, from sailing and rowing to mechanical and electrical engineering, while progressing through the cadet ranks and supporting younger cadets.

Speaking about his appointment, Blake said:

"Through my time in Sea Cadets I have learned invaluable skills from sailing and rowing to principles of mechanical and electrical engineering. Cadets have the ability to build confidence, teamwork and leadership skills for young people.

This year I received the honour of being appointed Lord-Lieutenant's Cadet for Cumbria. This position is one of great importance to me as I am able to represent my peers in cadets and my fellow youth of Cumbria."

Oliver, a member of 128 (Barrow-in-Furness) Squadron RAF Air Cadets, has similarly demonstrated outstanding commitment, leadership and service, earning his selection as a Lord-Lieutenant's Cadet for the coming year.

The Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria, Alexander Scott, congratulated both cadets on their appointments and thanked the cadet organisations, volunteers and adult instructors whose dedication continues to provide life-changing opportunities for young people across the county.

As National Cadet Week celebrates the positive impact of the cadet movement, the appointments of Blake and Oliver provide a timely reminder of the remarkable achievements of young people throughout Cumbria and the important role they play in their communities.

The Cumbria Lieutenancy looks forward to supporting Blake and Oliver throughout their year as Lord-Lieutenant's Cadets and wishes them every success in their new roles.
