Recruitment of Magistrates

The Lord-Lieutenant participates in the Lord Chancellor's Advisory Committee for the Appointment of Justices of the Peace in Cumbria and Lancashire.

The Advisory Committee oversees a recruitment programme to ensure that the two Justice areas in Cumbria have a full complement of magistrates. It establishes interview panels consisting of a balance of magistrates and lay members and ensures that the Advisory Committee itself has an appropriate balance of skilled and diverse members to populate the interview panels. Its other task is to promote and publicise at local level a succession of recruitment campaigns.

From 1st April, Cumbria and Lancashire will, at different times throughout the year, be inviting applications to become magistrates in both the criminal but also the family courts:   www.gov.uk/become-magistrate
