Welcome to the Cumbria Lieutenancy website

Welcome to the Cumbria Lieutenancy website. It outlines the role and work that I do as the Lord Lieutenant and the contribution made by the Vice Lord-Lieutenant and my Deputy Lieutenants in the day-to-day life of the County.

I was appointed His Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria on 5 July 2023 and as Lord Lieutenant it is my duty to uphold the dignity of the Crown. The Lieutenancy represents His Majesty in Cumbria, promotes voluntary service, enterprise, civic pride, community celebration and uniformed services, and connects communities with Royal honours, visits, and ceremonial events.

I am extremely passionate about recognising the people, charities, voluntary services, communities and businesses who do so much to improve the quality of life for all who live in Cumbria and make it such a special place. I hope that you will find our website helpful and informative.

Strategy 2025-34 cover

Our new Cumbria Lieutenancy Strategy: Supporting Community, Culture, Climate and Commonwealth

Since his appointment by His Majesty The King, the Lord-Lieutenant and the Lieutenancy Team have been thinking carefully about how they can best carry out their role in a way which accords with The King’s wishes and is sensitive to, and best serves, Cumbria’s unique characteristics.

A new Cumbria Lieutenancy Strategy was launched in September 2025, support The King’s four key themes: Community, Culture, Climate and Commonwealth. The Lieutenancy will aim to do this through collaborating, convening and championing people, activities, and achievements which take those themes forward.

To enable the Lieutenancy to play a positive role in Cumbria’s civil society, the Lord-Lieutenant Alexander Scott commissioned the University of Cumbria to carry out in-depth research to understand how Cumbrians think about effective society and citizenship.

These findings have informed our strategy and lie behind the approach which the Lieutenancy will adopt in fulfilling the King’s priorities and supporting the aspirations of Cumbrians over the next decade.

Mr Scott says: "I hope my term will be defined as having been valuable both to The King and to Cumbria. My objective is that its legacy will be a Lieutenancy which genuinely speaks for and promotes the interests of this special place and those who live here, and will enhance understanding and appreciation of the Monarchy and its contribution towards life in this part of England."
